This e-news will include significant Foundation initiatives and grants in Israel, as well as other important news. Beginning in 2023, we will distribute this newsletter quarterly.

What is Jewish about anti-poverty work?

In the United States, the Weinberg Foundation leads the National Affinity Group on Jewish Poverty—a collaborative effort of funders, Jewish Federations, direct service providers, researchers, media outlets, and advocates dedicated to fighting poverty in the American Jewish community. That work has prompted philosophical questions, which also inform the Foundation’s grantmaking in Israel. We are often asked about the “Jewish” in our work focused on Jewish poverty and, specifically, “what is Jewish about anti-poverty work?” 

 

As we approach the Jewish high holiday season, beginning of course with Rosh Hashanah, the Foundation felt it would be most timely to explore answers to this question through a blog post by Jon Hornstein, Weinberg Foundation Program Director.
