Supporting nonprofits and advancing equity through community development financial institutions

The Weinberg Foundation launched an initiative in 2021 with three community development financial institutions (CDFIs) to help nonprofits quickly access the working capital needed to meet the needs of their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the first year of the Foundation’s investment, these partners served 29 nonprofits (90% led by people of color) and leveraged their grants to provide an additional $27 million in capital to support projects in communities historically excluded from financing. 

 

Program Officer Anne Allen reflects on what these CDFIs have achieved, as well as what we learned along the way.

New partnership will help more Hawai'i families become homeowners

The Weinberg Foundation and Hawai'i Pacific Health recently announced a combined $1.5 million in social-impact loans and grants to support Hawai'i Community Lending (HCL), a nonprofit community development financial institution dedicated to building the capacity of low-income households and communities to achieve homeownership. HCL projects this funding will support 200 families in their pursuit of housing in Hawai'i, with the potential to help more than 900 families over the next three years.

Foundation employees present $400,000 in grants 

At the close of 2022, the Foundation hosted the Malia Silva-Duarte Employee Giving Program in Hawai'i. This biennial program, recently renamed in honor of a beloved former colleague, gives staff the opportunity to direct a $20,000 grant to a local nonprofit that aligns with the mission of the Weinberg Foundation.

Foundation grants $250,000 to support earthquake relief efforts in Turkey and Syria

In response to the devastation and loss of life caused by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this month, the Foundation has provided $250,000 in grants to support relief efforts in severely affected communities. Grants will go toward short-term needs, as well as longer-term responses.
